Hyderabad: Actor turned politician Chiranjeevi, on Saturday, launched a three-day 'Praja Rail Yatra' with the objective of popularising his Praja Rajyam Party's (PRP) election symbol- the rail engine.

PRP Chief Chiranjeevi flagged off a 15-bogie special train from Secunderabad railway station here that will travel across Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions before culminating at
Renigunta near Tirupati.

The special train has been christened 'Samajika Nyaya Sakatam'. 'The train and the rail engine truly symbolise social justice, which is our party's main plank,' he claimed.

Party president Chiranjeevi and his brother Pawan Kalyan will travel in the train upto Kazipet. Over the next three days, the PRP chief's son Ram
Charan Teja and his brother-in-law Allu Aravind's son, Allu Arjun, and others from the film industry will join the 'Yatra'. They will interact with people at different stations where the train stops.

The train left Secunderabad on Saturday and is scheduled to return at 11 a.m. on April 14. It will touch Kazipet, Warangal, Khammam, Vijayawada,
Eluru, Tadepalligudem, Nidadavolu, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Guntur, Chirala, Ongole, Nellore, Gudur and Renigunta. At
every place, programmes have been arranged and leaders and stars will interact with the locals.

However, the party has landed in fresh trouble after a spate of resignations came from some senior party leaders. Party general secretary and spokesman Prakala Prabhakar quit the party, making serious allegations against the top leadership.

Hyderabad (PTI): Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on Saturday launched a three-day 'Praja Rail Yatra' with the objective of popularising its election symbol -- the rail engine.

PRP Chief Chiranjeevi flagged off a 15-bogie special train from Secunderabad railway station here that will travel across Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions before culminating at Renigunta near Tirupati on April 13.

"The train and the rail engine truly symbolise social justice, which is our party's main plank," he claimed.

Chiranjeevi's son Ram Charan Tej and nephew Allu Arjun are on board the train greeting people at important stations en route.

"My basic purpose is to popularise the PRP election symbol, the rail engine. I am not campaigning for the party or my father as such. I am only supporting him," Ram Charan Tej told PTI over phone from the special train that halted briefly at Warangal.

Chiranjeevi and his younger brother, actor Pavan Kalyan were also scheduled to ride the train but are going ahead with road shows and public meetings.

Chiranjeevi - the leader on the net!

‘Searching’ for the right leader

Whether or not they make it to the top post, some of our politicians are definitely making it to the top of the popularity charts on the internet. According to Google India, the ‘most searched politicians on Google in India include the following (in alphabetical order):

  • Chiranjeevi
  • LK Advani
  • Manmohan Singh
  • Mayawati
  • Narendra Modi
  • Rahul Gandhi
  • Sanjay Dutt
  • Shashi Tharoor
  • Sonia Gandhi
  • Varun Gandhi

The list is not surprising, given that most of these politicians (or aspiring politicians) have been in the news and are likely to play a key role on the post-poll scenario. While some like Advani, Mayawati, Manmohan Singh, the Gandhi family and Narendra Modi are always in the limelight and public glare, others like Sanjay Dutt and Varun Gandhi have been in the news recently, or have ensured that they be in the news!

While Dutt dominated the headlines for a couple of days after he was barred from contesting elections by the Supreme Court - squashing the Samajwadi Party's dreams of riding on the star's popularity, Varun Gandhi has been on the front page of every newspaper ever since he decided to let his thoughts and words run loose in Pilibhit on 8 March.

It is only natural that Chiranjeevi, being a Telugu super star, would attract immense attention and curiosity before his maiden Lok Sabha journey. The name might be a wee bit surprising is Shashi Tharoor, former Indian diplomat and writer, who was the official candidate of India for the office of United Nations Secretary-General in 2006. Tharoor, who is the Congress candidate for the key Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, represents what is known as this "new breed of politicians" - defined by their urbane, educated and professional outlook... adjectives that perhaps best describe the bulk of internet users and hence, those who might search for their favourite politician on Google.

Tharoor in the ten most searched politicians? Not so surprising anymore.

So what does this list sent out by Google tell us. That the estimated 50 million net users in the country, bulk of whom belong to the younger age groups, are using search engines to look for those politicians we would expect them to.

A word of caution for these politicians though: Do not mistake such statistics to be a measure of your popularity or a sign of things to come. As predictable as the Indian electorate might have been online, its unpredictability behind the voting machine is well-known.

He drew crowds when he went to villages in his Prachara Ratham and now mega star Chiranjeevi plans to woo voters by campaigning in the Praja Railu. Chiranjeevi kickstarted the last leg of their campaign by flagging off a train at the Secundarabad Railway station on Saturday morning.

Praja Rail Yatra on track
Chiranjeevi, who flagged off the train with his brother, Pavan Kalyan, said the train, his party symbol, symbolises the party policy of social justice as it carried all sections of people. The last leg of the campaign assumes significance considering the negative publicity the party got following the resignation of party spokesperson, Parakala Prabhakar, two days ago.

The future course of action

The future course of action

At the grass root level: After having successful covered a major part of the state, Chiranjeevi will now move to the Karimnagar district where the concentration would be on collecting information about each village and also the problems that are faced over there.

The party has deputed a Praja Sevakulu (worker) to undertake this task. V Rajendra Rao, a convenor of the party, says that Chiranjeevi will write letters to each individual in the village and urge them to get involved in the campaign.

'He will throw out corruption from AP'

Rajshekhar, another fan, says: "We need change and he will bring that for us. We are fed up with the politics of 40 years in Andhra Pradesh. We are fed up with the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party. He will become the CM and throw out corruption from the state. We are 100 per cent sure of that."

The 53-year-old actor, who hails from the Kapu community, is not banking on caste politics. His strength, according to political observers, will be the youth and the women.

Speaking of youth, a general complaint at each of Chiranjeevi's rallies is that several youth have not yet been given voter identification cards. Krishnam Naidu, a youth present at one of the rallies, said that this has been done intentionally by the Congress so that the vote share of Chiranjeevi comes down.

'Watching the man is a treat to the eye'

The chariot finally rolls in with the music blaring and the crowd erupts. Each member in the crowd has two thumbs up, aping Chiranjeevi's style of greeting the crowd. After the customary garlanding and other pleasantries, the superstar -- dressed in a white kurta and pyjama -- begins speaking.

Now what was Chiranjeevi saying, it would be better to ask the man himself. After every word there is a roar in the crowd. On the sidelines of the rally, we spoke to a couple of his fans. Each one said they are 100 per cent sure that Chiranjeevi will rule Andhra Pradesh.

Sam, a fan and also a worker in the youth wing, says that watching the man is a treat to the eye. When asked what was so special about him and why they had so much hope in him, the reply came, "Just watch him speak. Don't you feel that the man is only speaking the truth? Look at his eyes and look at the truth and commitment in them."

Agsar Khan one of the participants in the road show says, "I have been witnessing the elections in Andhra Pradesh since 1977. Barring N T Rama Rao, this state has never witnessed this kind of euphoria. Chiranjeevi is a different kind of leader and I hope he wins."

As we wait for the chariot to roll in the crowd is getting impatient. There is dancing and screaming. Interestingly there are also questions being asked whether Chiranjeevi's brother, Pavan Kalyan would be coming too.

A youth worker said Pavan Kalyan is another major draw in the villages of Andhra Pradesh. The man may not have the necessary political skills, but we love his guts and every youth in the state wants to have that kind of guts.

All roads leading up to Medchal, where the star was scheduled to perform on Thursday night, were jammed. People were seen getting off their vehicles and running on the roads in order to get a glimpse of their star.

A sea of humanity was present in Medchal when rediff.com. Interestingly, Chiranjeevi, who has been touring the state on a chariot, has been drawing more youth and women.

In him, supporters see hope and change. Speaking of change, there is a very interesting banner at the Praja Rajyam Party office in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, which has the picture of both Chiranjeevi and United States President Barack Obama.

Watching a Chiranjeevi road show is unique in its own way. Medchal, a town 40 kilometres away from Hyderabad usually takes just 30 minutes to reach. However, thanks to this rally the ride from Hyderabad took nearly two hours.

Chiru rules out post-poll support for Congress, TD

Chiru rules out post-poll support for Congress, TD
http://www.hindu.com/2009/04/06/stories/2009040655180100.htm

Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi has ruled out the possibility of supporting either the Congress or the TDP after the elections, saying he does not see any scope for doubts about his party’s performance.

He averred that his party would cross the ‘magic figure’ (half-way mark of 147 Assembly seats) and get the majority required for forming the government in the State. “There is no confusion in the minds of the people. If there is any confusion, it is in the Opposition parties,” he said.
‘No support for BJP’

The Praja Rajyam would also not support the BJP-led alliance at the national level as his party was secular and there was no scope of extending support to a Congress-led alliance, he said while replying to queries at the ‘Meet-The-Press’ programme organised by the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists here on Sunday. Mr. Chiranjeevi ruled out the possibility of backing the proposed Third Front as the Telugu Desam was a party in it. “I have a gut feeling about the emergence of a fourth front and that will be our alliance,” he said. Denying allegations that the PR leadership had collected huge amounts of money from aspirants to allot party tickets, he blamed the Opposition parties of successfully running a smear campaign against his party.
Opposition weak

Mr. Chiranjeevi said the Opposition was weak and could not effectively highlight the lapses committed by the government. The “mistakes” committed by the TDP during its rule was inhibiting it from raising corruption and related issues. The PR, he asserted, would order an inquiry into the “wealth amassed by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and take steps to recover the money” rather than sit on the probe reports like the TDP and Congress Governments did.

Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi is already into neck-deep political mire; and he has realised that he cannot come out of it.

On Sunday, Chiranjeevi said he was pained at the way hundreds of activists belonging to his fans associations deserted the PRP and joined the Congress. “It hurt me very much, as they did not understand me and my compulsions properly. I never expected that politics would spoil relationships and distance people whom I thought were my close friends and relatives,” he said.

The PRP president said distribution of tickets was done based on merit and chances of winning. This would have definitely caused heartburn among the other aspirants. “But, we stood by our principle of social justice,” he said.

Chiru slams deserters

Chiru slams deserters
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/hyderabad/chiru-slams-deserters-378
The Praja Rajyam chief Chiranjeevi slammed his long-time fans and friends who had left him saying, “It is better for people with such weak character to leave the party.”

He said he was pained that his long-time fans and friends were leaving him because they did not get tickets to contest the elections. He never knew politics could destroy human relations, he told a meet-the-press programme organised by the AP Union of Working Journalists.

“Those who adored me for 30 years have switched loyalties just because of denial of tickets,” he pointed out. “I call it childish. I am not angry with them.”

The PR had allotted tickets to three aspirants among fans of Chiran-jeevi. The party did not accommodate other fans as they had lacked clout among the people, he added.

Chiranjeevi, made light of the desertions, saying they were common in every party. Leaders whose views differ with the party line leave abruptly, he said. He asserted the Praja Rajyam would remain intact.

However, Chiranjeevi did express regret over the resignation of the party vice-president, Mr C. Anjaneya Reddy. “I was shocked by Mr Reddy’s exit. He is a sincere and committed leader in the party. I am ready to apologise for any wrongdoing,” he said.

That seemed to have worked, as Mr Reddy later met Chiranjeevi at the Praja Rajyam for about an hour and withdrew his resignation.

Rebutting the cash-for-seats allegations levelled against the party, Chiranjeevi said these accusations were scripted by his political rivals and they had “succeeded” in this false propaganda. He said the rail engine would remain the PR’s common poll symbol despite the objections raised by the Rashtriya Krantikari Samajwadi Party.

Women and differently-abled persons, who were not given due share of tickets, would be accommodated in the Legislative Council, he said.

In politics too, there will be no honeymoon for Chiru

Actor-turned-politician, Chiranjeevi went back in time while addressing a press conference here on Sunday. He narrated the difficulties he faced during the early days of his movie career.
“I used to work for three shifts. When I was newly married, I was busy shooting films and did not go on a honeymoon. I worked for 45 days at a stretch for a film in which Jayaprada was the lead actor,” he said.
“In those days, handsome and attractive lead actors were calling the shots in Tollywood. Despite my normal looks and lack of a godfather, I succeeded in tinsel town,” he disclosed.
The Praja Rajyam chief then focussed on politics and expressed his dissatisfaction over the poor coverage in the media about the ticket allotment in his party which he claimed was done in accordance with social justice.
He gave evasive replies to some questions posed by the scribes at the press meet.
“When I said I will stick to social justice while allotting tickets, many expressed doubts. But, I fulfilled my promise by giving as many as 104 Assembly tickets to Backward Classes,” he said. I am disappointed at the moderate response from the media over this, he added.
The PR chief disclosed that he was afraid of scribes in his early days as an actor and thought that they interfered in the personal lives of celebrities. “Now, I have changed my opinion about mediapersons,” he said.
Chiranjeevi defended his decision to contest from two seats. “What is wrong in contesting from two seats. Our constitution permits it. I don’t see any wastage of public money,” he said.
His companion, Mr T. Devender Goud, and Mana Party chief, Mr K. Gnaneswar are also contesting from two seats each.
When scribes sought to know if he was ready to make a dalit as the Chief Minister if the PR was voted to power, he said: “If it is people’s wish, I have no objection.”
He defended the allotment of tickets to turncoats by saying: “We have gone according to the public wish based on surveys.”
Chiranjeevi did not find any fault in fielding non-locals from LS constituencies as the state had been following that tradition for many years.

Chiranjeevi - the rising political star

Chiranjeevi
THE BIG VOTE 2009
Actor-politician Chiranjeevi will be more than a handful for the Congress and TDP
By Lalita Iyer

The air in Vemagiri village of Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district is hot, humid and charged. A crowd and some decked-up camels and horses wait outside an enclosure. Actor-politician Chiranjeevi's fans, dressed in camouflage trousers and T-shirts, man the gate. The second enclosure has fewer people. Only big names can get through the third gate. The innermost enclosure has an air-conditioned tent, with a table and two chairs. Here, Chiru holds his meetings. The rest of the crowd sits under a pandal, star-struck.

The entourage sets out by 11 a.m. The crowd slows down the exit of Chiru's van, which has three seats, a fridge and a dry toilet. He climbs a few steps and greets his admirers, who drive alongside his vehicle on the four-lane National Highway 5, hoping to catch a glimpse of him when he is not on top, and trying to catch his eye if he is riding shotgun. Every time he waves, they drum on the van and fling garlands at him. When he stops, they shower him with gifts. A physically challenged man keeps pace with the van to be lifted to shake hands with his idol.

The campaigning of Chiru's Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) goes on till late night, when strategies are discussed. Most of the time he is atop the van, waving and talking to the crowd. During breaks, he uses a water-based sunscreen lotion and has buttermilk with water or ragi.

Chiru says people are his oxygen. "I am used to the public. In my professional life as an entertainer I understood how important the public is. I am there with the people and have concern for them, which is why social justice for all is our poll plank," he says. Drawing a parallel with the days of the late NTR, he says, "If there was a necessity of change then, there is a necessity even now. He challenged legendary politicians then, and I am fighting them now."

For him, politics is different from films. "In the film world we were a pampered lot. But there is no comparison to the satisfaction one gets from being with the public. I feel my life is fulfilled," he says. "I am into this only to move forward. The system can be changed if one has the will."

Perhaps, Chiru has taken the plunge at the right time. THE WEEK/C-Voter survey shows that 43 per cent of respondents want a change of government in the state. The PRP is projected to win 57 Assembly seats, out of 294, a good sign for a fledgling party in a state where the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party have been main contenders. The PRP may have a positive swing of 28 per cent and may do well in coastal Andhra, where it is projected to win 39 seats. Moreover, Chiru, who hails from north coastal Andhra and is set to contest from the Tirupati Assembly constituency, is rated high for the CM's post (see survey).

During campaigning, Chiru is assisted by friend Koneru Kumar, who has come from the US to be his secretary. Vikram, his speech-writer, and Raj Kumar, the media vice-chairman, keep him updated on the stats and issues. Says Vikram, who coined the party's phrase 'Marpu kosam (for the sake of change)': "I only give him the inputs. He builds his speeches around the inputs. He is spontaneous and speaks off the cuff." Chiru is keen on sharing his ideas but his team says the local media is underplaying the campaign.

A white shirt and black trousers are Chiru's signature attire. "Black is my favourite colour and white is what the public demands," he says. He has placed orders for the clothes from Calvin Klein. While on the move, he prefers idlis or dosas, or even pooris, for breakfast. His Tamil cook Subrahmanyam prepares his lunch in a van accompanying the entourage.

Politically, Chiru is playing his cards deftly. "We are doing a lot of revolutionary things. We have given many seats to BCs and are giving general seats to STs and SCs. We have to learn to fight from within the system," he says. Of 181 PRP candidates announced, 77 are BCs. Also, there are 20 women candidates. Chiru feels the youth will vote for him. "But it is the women and middle class who are 100 per cent with me," he says.

Chiru plans to focus on efficient running of hospitals and hostels for backward classes, and starting vocational courses to provide 10 lakh jobs in 1,000 days. "If we can get over certain hurdles, we can do it," he says. And he is ready to give it back to those who call him a spoiler. Says he: "Why a spoiler? We will win."

A triangular contest is on the cards in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh. The ruling Congress will go it alone. The TDP has formed a grand alliance with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), the CPI and CPI(M). Chiranjeevi's PRP is the new entrant.

But confusion prevailed among constituents of the grand alliance on March 30, the last day of filing nominations for the 22 Lok Sabha and 145 Assembly constituencies going to polls in the first phase on April 16. At least 25 TDP cadres filed nominations in constituencies it had allotted to the TRS. Negotiations were on between TRS leader K. Chandrasekhara Rao and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu ahead of the last date for withdrawal of nominations on April 2.

Even as the TRS, contesting from 45 Assembly and nine Lok Sabha seats in the Telangana region, has been making demands from the TDP, analysts say the TRS, which was with the Congress in the 2004 polls, is merely playing spoiler for the TDP. But the CPI(M), too, has said that it got only 14 seats when it wanted 18. Naidu has his hands full.

On its part, the Congress-which won 29 seats in the 2004 general elections-announced its candidates for 290 Assembly seats and all the 42 Lok Sabha seats without much ado. The party manifesto is out and campaigning is underway. The BJP's efforts to clinch an alliance in the state fell flat. But it has for the first time decided to contest from all Assembly and Lok Sabha seats; the party did not win any seat from the state in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls. The Lok Satta Party, founded by former IAS officer Jayaprakash Narayan, is also in the fray for the first time. Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has said it will contest from all the Lok Sabha and Assembly seats.

The issue of a separate Telangana state has been watered down, with all political parties promising to ?do something about it. The BJP says it will create a Telangana state within 100 days of coming to ?power at the Centre. The Congress says that though it supported a ?separate state, there are issues that need discussion.

Surprisingly, Naidu, who stood for a united Andhra, has taken the separate Telangana route. He has no other choice. If he loses, he may not be able to keep his flock together. The campaigning by NTR's son Balakrishna, whose daughter is married to Naidu's son, has to some extent lifted the spirits of TDP cadres. But it is the launch of Jr NTR, son of NTR's son Harikrishna, into campaigning that has boosted the cadres' morale. Clad in khakis and riding a ratham, like his grandfather used to do, Jr NTR is a crowd-puller. A wag says, "NTR distributed his properties among his children, but the best he kept for this young man."

THE WEEK/C-Voter survey shows that the TDP faces a negative swing in the Telangana region, which accounts for 119 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha seats. Still, the party has an edge in the region because of the presence of the TRS in the grand alliance.
Parties have announced sops to woo voters. The TDP has promised free TV sets and money to poor families, besides free power to farmers and free rice up to 25kg for BPL families. The Congress is banking on the development agenda. CM Rajasekhar Reddy has implemented a number of pro-poor welfare schemes, including the Aroygasri health insurance cover and NREGA. Still, THE WEEK/C-Voter survey shows that the party may have a negative swing of 11 per cent in the polls. Clearly, it will be a close contest.

PRP allotted more seats to BCs, says Pavan Kalyan
http://www.hindu.com/2009/04/04/stories/2009040454600300.htm
Praja Rajyam Party has allotted 96 seats to BCs out of 240 it announced so far for contesting in the Assembly. This showed the party’s commitment towards social justice, said actor and Yuva Rajyam State president Pavan Kalyan.

Addressing people at public meetings at Kothavalasa and Vizianagaram on Friday, Mr. Kalyan said that communities representing artisans were given tickets, if problems of artisans were to be raised in the Assembly.

He assured the gathering that that PRP would provide basic amenities in proportionate to the growing population and education of international standard to the poor. It was unfortunate to learn that people in the fort town lacked adequate drinking water.

On the adverse reaction to his speeches from the Congress leaders, he said that he would not hesitate to point out their mistakes, adding that the Congress Government had been adopting anti-poor policies.

He said that the “Abhaya Hastham” of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister, was nothing but “mondi cheyyi” (empty hand). He appealed to voters to elect PRP nominee Meesala Gita from Vizianagaram.

The actor sang ballads criticising the Congress and the Telugu Desam to amuse his fans. Braving the scorching heat they waited for him at Ayodhya Maidan here an hour before his scheduled meeting at 11 a.m. But the actor reached at the spot at 1.45 p.m.

They danced in ecstasy to the foot-tapping party song ‘Ekkada choosina Praja Rajyam, ekkada kellina Praja Rajyam chinnoda…”

“It is a thrilling experience for me and with people backing me, I have no doubt that Praja Rajyam will ride home with a thumping majority,” he told presspersons after filing his nomination papers from Palacole in West Godavari district in his maiden attempt to enter the Assembly.

He lashed out at TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu saying the TDP had done nothing for the people in its nine year-rule, especially in improving the lot of the poor .

Jayaprada speaks to DC: ‘I might join PR in future’
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/neutral/jayaprada-speaks-dc%3A-%E2%80%98i-might-join-pr-future%E2%80%99-999
The Samajwadi Party MP and actor, Jayaprada, feels that fellow actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi might become the Chief Minister of the state. She is also toying with the idea of joining the Praja Rajyam in the future.

She revealed this while speaking to this newspaper on Friday after celebrating her birthday at Tirumala along with her husband, mother and other family members. Excerpts from the interview:

How special is the Samajwadi Party to you? Why did you leave the TD?
I find many similarities between the Samajwadi Party and the Telugu Desam. Mr Mulayam Singh is like N.T. Rama Rao. His vision is similar to that of NTR, be it welfare schemes or the longing for people’s good. Both parties even have cycle as the election symbol.

How many seats is the SP expecting in the elections?
Not less than 40 out of 80. I am confident that the SP would play a crucial role in national politics. I am also confident that Mr Mulayam Singh will be the Prime Minister one day. At present, tentative talks are on with Mr Paswan and Mr Lalu. There is no chance of Mayawati becoming the Prime Minister.

Tell us about the winning chances of your fellow actor Chiranjeevi in AP?
In 1983, when NTR walked the streets, people saw God coming to them. But the situation is different now. However, Chiranjeevi is a fine human being. People have seen the Congress and the Telugu Desam and are clearly hoping for a change. The chances of Chiranjeevi becoming the Chief Minister seem certain.

Do you have any plans of joining the Praja Rajyam?
Of course, it might happen in future.

Why didn’t you contest from AP?
Ok. I will contest from AP after five years. Wherever I may be, my heart always beats for my Telugu people.

What prompted you to turn from films to politics?
When I was at school in Rajahmundry, I was a die-hard fan of NTR. I never expected that I would act with him (in the Telugu movie Adavi Ramudu). Similarly, I never expected that my hero would be my leader one day and I would join the Telugu Desam. It is all destiny.

Tell us about the BSP and the BJP?
The rise of Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh blocked the progress of the state. Law and order problems are on the rise. During her birthday celebrations, huge amounts were collected. Officials who didn’t obey her orders were killed. The crime rate is going up alarmingly. There is no protection for women. Coming to the BJP, its prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani is dangerous than George Bush.

Do you support the Women Reservation Bill?
I will never forget that. Even during my maiden speech in the TD, I insisted on realising 33 per cent reservation for women. It will continue to be an impractical thing until and unless politicians come forward with pure hearts. As chairperson of the UPA, Mrs Sonia Gandhi utterly failed to do justice to the demand. I am unhappy that the blame is always put on the Samajwadi Party.

Is there any possibility of an alliance between the SP and the Congress?
I am just a party worker. I feel that the Congress wants to avoid us. It is used to a use-and-throw style. But only the future will reveal the shape of alliances.

Jayaprada's love for Chiu

Spicy Anushka

Jayaprada's Love For Chiranjeevi

The eternal Telugu beauty Jayaprada may not be seen much in the political scenario of the south, but then she seems to have this strong affinity for megastar Chiranjeevi. It is being heard that this pretty lady has been showering heaps of praises and accolades on the megastar.

Sources have revealed that Jaya has vouched that Chiru will play a key role in deciding the fate of the parties that will take power after these elections. She is also believed to have said that PRP will score a major surprise number of seats in this election though it is a new party.

There are reports that Jaya has been campaigning for the party behind the screen and call it their onscreen romance during the film ‘Veta’, Jayaprada sure seems to be smitten by Chiru mania. Let us wait and see how much this affection will turn to be true. And she is seriously expecting a call from Chiranjeevi to join his party at least in near future.

People want change: Chiru

People want change: Chiru
Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) chief Chiranjeevi today said the people of the State, who were vexed with the ruling Congress
Government as well as the earlier TDP regime, were now eagerly looking forward for a change.

Speaking at roadshows on the third day of his Praja Ankita Yatra in and around Kakinada, he said the people had no reason to vote for the Congress and TDP which looted the State in all aspects. Accusing the two parties of indulging in largescale corruption, Chiranjeevi said the Congress had looted people under the guise of development while the TDP had started Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to take away their lands.

Questioning the need to establish the Coastal Corridor, he said it was intended to benefit some individuals at the expense of thousands of fishermen and farmers who would be thrown out of their lands. At this rate, if allowed, the Government would not hesitate to even mortgage the lives of the people for the personal gain of some people, he alleged.

The Congress Government had neglected the welfare of fishermen in the district.

Once the PRP came to power, it would take up the Anchorage Port issue and also review the agreements with a private party for creating a Deep Water Port. The party would sort out all the problems of the people, including bringing down the prices of essential commodities, he said.

Stating that his bond with the people was 30 years old, he said he would live up to their expectations. He appealed to the people to teach a fitting lesson to the corrupt rulers by electing the PRP with a huge majority in the elections. PRP convenor MS Chakravarthi, secretary Vanga Geetha and other leaders accompanied Chiranjeevi.

Chiranjeevi focusing on youth, women

Chiranjeevi focusing on youth, women
Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) chief Chiranjeevi has been mainly concentrating on youth and women in his Praja Ankita Yatra since four days in East Godavari district.

Most of his speeches have been focused on women and youth.

In fact, the PRP chief has been using dialogues from some of his films in his endeavour to inspire women and youth.

Starting his Praja Ankita Yatra on the fourth day from Mandapeta today, he advised the youth to become ‘Stalin’ and ‘Tagore’ to usher in a silent revolution in the State.

Women and youth were more powerful and it was the right time to show their might in the elections, he added.

Youth should come forward to eradicate corruption, poverty, unemployment and illiteracy, the PRP chief said.

Launching a frontal attack on the government, he alleged that the agriculture sector was neglected and welfare of the farming community forgotten. If the farmers went on strike for one year, what would be the fate of the so-called leaders as well as the State, he asked. Supplying of free power to farmers was the duty of the government, he opined. Agriculture Minister N Raghuveera Reddy knew nothing about agriculture except politics, he alleged.

Allot symbols to Prajarajyam, LS & DMDK: SC

Allot symbols to Prajarajyam, LS & DMDK: SC
http://www.zeenews.com/nation/2009-03-27/518423news.html
New Delhi, March 27: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Election Commission to allot common symbols to the three political parties -- Prajarajyam, Lok Satta and DMDK -- for the ensuing general elections.

A Bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice P Sathasivam, however, clarified that the directions are only "interim" for the present elections and the parties cannot claim any equity until the dispute was settled.

The apex court also stayed an Andhra Pradesh High Court order directing the EC to allot common symbols to all registered political parties in the state.

While the Prajarajyma is floated by Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi, the Lok Satta has been set up by a former IAS officer Jai Prakash Narayan and the two parties are contesting the elections for all the 42 Lok Sabha and 294 Assembly seats from Andhra Pradesh.

The DMDK headed by Tamil actor Vijaykant is contesting all the seats in the state on its own.

People were waiting to elect the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) to power as there was a political vacuum in the State due to the misrule of both the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Congress, said PRP president Chiranjeevi.

Addressing roadshows at Kotananduru, Tuni (East Godavari) and Payakaraopet (Visakhapatnam) today as part of his five-day Praja Ankita Yatra, he said both the Congress and the TDP, surprised at the success of the PRP meeting at Rajahmundry, were trying to spread a lie that the PRP had no patronage.

Describing the surveys as bogus, he told the parties to witness the overwhelming response to his Praja Ankita Yatra launched today.

Chiranjeevi said people were fed up of both the TDP and the corrupt Congress and added that the ruling party was afraid of the silent revolution which was resulting in increasing support to the PRP.

Giving a sentimental touch to his speech, Chiranjeevi said he had started his successful film career from the East Godavari district and predicted that the PRP would assume power in the elections as he had begun his campaign from East Godavari.

Criticising the Congress Government, he asked what was the use in launching Jalayagnam, when the government had failed to offer drinking water to people. He said the projects were benefiting those with vested interests.

Farmers were turning as farm workers due to lack of irrigation facility, he lamented.

Chiranjeevi wondered where social justice was when a common man was deprived of the basic facilities even after 60 years of Independence.

He said though there was abundance of human resources in the State, the government had failed to utilise them.

Chiranjeevi promised ten lakh jobs to the youth in 1,000 days, if the PRP came to power. He also promised to launch a number of welfare programmes for women.

Stating that if a large number of people were attending his programmes without the need for any mobilisation, it was because people supported him whole-heartedly. He appealed to the people to teach a lesson to the Congress and the TDP in the elections.

Chiranjeevi to contest from Tirupati

Chiranjeevi to contest from Tirupati
http://sify.com/news/fullstory.php?id=14875926&?vsv=TopHP7
Actor-politician Chiranjeevi would be contesting from Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati assembly seat, his Praja Rajya Party (PRP) announced on Friday while declaring the first list of candidates for the state assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Unlike other parties, which declared their lists either in Delhi or Hyderabad, he chose Jaggampet in coastal Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district to announce the candidates for 100 assembly and nine Lok Sabha seats.

Chiru, as he is popularly known, declared the list at 9.27 a.m., the auspicious time set by his astrologers, after prayers and rituals on Telugu New Year's Day Ugadi.

Stars cast a spell on Andhra election scene

The party's senior leader Hariram Joagaiah announced that Chiranjeevi would contest from the temple town of Tirupati, but it was not clear if he would also contest from two other constituencies in Andhra and Telangana regions like Telugu Desam Party (TDP) founder and legendary actor N T Rama Rao.

He had earlier hinted that he might also contest from a constituency in his native West Godavari district in coastal Andhra and a third one in Nalgonda district in Telangana region.

Tirupati, where the famous Lord Venkateshwara temple is located, is considered auspicious by the politicians and NTR had contested from there after launching the TDP in 1982.

Chiranjeevi, 54, who floated the PRP in August last year, will face B Karunakar Reddy of the ruling Congress party and Sankar Reddy of the main opposition TDP.

The Congress' M Venkatramana was elected from this seat in the 2004 elections but this time the party has fielded Karunakar Reddy, a close aide of Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and former chairman of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which runs the affairs of Tirumala temple.

Chiranjeevi declared that his brothers, actors Pavan Kalyan and Naga Babu, would not contest but his brother-in-law and party general secretary Allu Aravind would be a candidate.

He told reporters that the tickets were distributed in line with the party's philosophy of social justice. The list of 100 assembly candidates includes 48 from the backward classes, 13 from Scheduled Castes and 27 candidates from other castes.

He said the party would come out with the second list by Friday evening. He had already announced that the party would field 100 candidates from backward classes for the 294-member state assembly.

Prominent in the first list of nine for the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state is former minister T Devender Goud, who will contest from the newly-created Malkangiri constituency.

Goud had quit the TDP last year to float the Nava Telangana Party to fight for separate statehood to Telangana region but recently merged his party with the PRP.

The party has fielded Fatima Begum from the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, a stronghold of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.

The other Lok Sabha candidates are M Naga Rao (Adilabad-ST), V Rajender (Karimnagar), Shivakumar Lingayat (Zaheerabad), D T Nayak (Mahabubnagar), Rajmouli (Warangal-SC), M P Simhachalam (Araku-ST) and V Kalyani (Srikakulam).

PR looking for a perfect caste equation?

PR looking for a perfect caste equation?
http://www.hindu.com/2009/03/26/stories/2009032660730800.htm
HYDERABAD: Notwithstanding expressions of confidence from senior leaders that the Praja Rajyam would sweep the polls, the think tank in the fledgling party is busy working out caste equations, a factor that it expects to give them an edge in over 100 seats.

Till late on Wednesday evening, the party’s political brains were busy putting together firm numbers. Internal analyses of the party based on surveys, a top source said, included good performance in 25 of the 34 seats in the North coastal districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam and 25 of the 34 constituencies in East and West Godavari. Also, the surveys, using different mechanisms, have given it 25 each in Telangana and Rayalaseema.

Having done the groundwork to achieve a minimum of 100 seats, the party is going forward with focus on fielding more candidates from the BCs, scheduled castes and tribes and minorities too, giving it that much more results. A leader said they were trying to have at least one Muslim from every district too.
Game plan

Enquiries with senior leaders revealed that they had a clear game plan of securing the maximum number of seats in the five districts of coastal Andhra, keeping the demographic profile of the region in mind. Guidelines being followed wherever possible include pitting a candidate from the backward classes to fight the opposition if it fielded a ‘Kamma’ or a ‘Reddy’ and use the sway that ‘Rajus’ and ‘Kapus’ held in these districts to the best advantage of the Praja Rajyam.

As the first list of the TDP was announced, there was a flurry of unobtrusive activity. Party chief K. Chiranjeevi, general secretary Allu Aravind and Yuva Rajyam president Pawan Kalyan began holding parleys with leaders for fine-tuning the list of candidates. Mr. Chiranjeevi is scheduled to fly on Thursday morning on his tour of East Godavari district.

PR rejects rebel leaders

PR rejects rebel leaders
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/neutral/pr-rejects-rebel-leaders-001
Causing disappointment to several aspirants and sitting MLAs in the Congress and the Telugu Desam, who were denied tickets for the elections, the Praja Rajyam chief, Chiranjeevi, on Tuesday made it clear that he would not give Assembly tickets to new entrants into his party henceforth.
“We will not accommodate newcomers in the party’s candidates’ list for the ensuing polls. If we allot tickets to new entrants from other parties, leaders, who have been with the party since its inception, will be deprived. So, we have decided not to give tickets to those leaders, who join the party henceforth, whether it is Congress minister Mr G. Surya Rao or somebody else,” he said.
He said that the PR’s first list of candidates and manifesto would be released on Wednesday.
Former MP from the BJP and veteran actor, Mr U.V. Krishnam Raju, on Tuesday joined the PR in the presence of Chiranjeevi. Mr Raju is likely to be fielded from the Narsapur LS seat.
Speaking on this occasion, the PR chief welcomed Mr Raju, who hails from his village, Mogalturu, in West Godavari district, to the party.
“In fact, Mr Raju was my role model during my college days. After watching his movies, I decided to become an actor like him and succeeded in due course,” Chiranjeevi said.
When asked whether Mr Raju would take initiative to forge an alliance between the PR and the BJP, he said, “My joining indicates this. Moreover, I support the BJP
at the national level.”
He added that he would explain the reasons later. Surprisingly, even Chiranjeevi spoke on similar lines. “We are not against the BJP.
We are only saying that our party is secular.”

Speaking on the occasion, Raju said that he was attracted with the social agenda of the Praja Rajyam and wanted to the people of Andhra Pradesh, as he could not do much during the NDA rule.
Another film star, Srihari also tipped to join Praja Rajyam party and contest from Kukatpally.

Praja Rajyam demands YSR's resignation
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/004200903230951.htm
Hyderabad (PTI): Demanding resignation of Andhra chief minister for "failing" to give backward classes their due, Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi on Sunday accused Y S Rajasekhara Reddy of betraying the BC by allotting a meagre 66 assembly seats to them for the ensuing elections.

Addressing a press conference at PRP headquarters here, Chiranjeevi said, "I am surprised by the number of seats the Congress allotted to the BCs. It only proved that the ruling party's tall talk on social justice was a farce."

Reminding the chief minister of the unanimous resolution passed in the assembly in support of 33 per cent reservation for BCs, he wondered why the Congress failed to implement it.

Chiranjeevi announced that his party would give more than 100 assembly seats (one-third) to the BCs.

"We will strictly go by our philosophy of social justice while announcing our candidates for the electoral battle," he said.

He said that the party would announce its first list of candidates in the next 48 hours.

The PRP chief said he was under "tremendous pressure" to contest from a constituency in his native West Godavari district apart from his first choice of Tirupati.

He said if rules permit, he will contesting from Nalgonda.

Admitting that securing a common election symbol was a difficult task, the PRP chief said they were optimistic of a favourable response from the Supreme Court.

Asked if there was a likelihood of PRP resuming talks with TRS with reports doing rounds that the latter might pull out of the Grand Alliance, Chiranjeevi said the time for talks was already over.

PR will give over 100 seats to BCs: Chiru

HITTING OUT: Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi addressing a press conference at his party office on Sunday. Party leader T. Devender Goud is beside him.

PR will give over 100 seats to BCs: Chiru http://www.hindu.com/2009/03/23/stories/2009032360650400.htm

HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi has said that by giving party tickets to only 66 candidates from the backward classes, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy stood exposed.
At a press conference on Sunday, he said after crying hoarse that the list of candidates prepared by the Congress would truly reflect the party’s sincerity towards implementing social justice, people expected him to ensure that at least 100 seats were allotted to the BCs.
However, the Congress ended up giving 138 seats to the forward classes, including 87 to those from one single community (Reddys), he said, reminding the Chief Minister of the unanimous resolution passed in the Assembly in August 2008 that all parties must give one-third of the tickets to the BCs.
“The Praja Rajyam will not go back on its promise of ensuring social justice, by giving over 100 seats to the BCs,” Mr. Chiranjeevi reiterated, demanding that Dr. Reddy should quit office for not keeping his word.
Referring to the large turnout at party’s rallies in Tirupati, Rajahmundry and at the Parade Grounds here on Saturday, he said it was proof of the party’s popularity across all three regions. “There is a silent revolution happening and the day is not far, when people will vote for change and for social justice,” he said.
No time for talks
He shook his head in response to a query whether Praja Rajyam would ally with the TRS, with reports of the latter likely to break away from the Grand Alliance. “The time for talks is over. Members of the alliance want the world to know they are united, but fact is, they have their individual agenda.”
Common symbol
Asked about the search for a common symbol, Mr. Chiranjeevi said he was prepared to wait till the last minute for it. “We have furnished proof of our large membership and we are hopeful of justice being done by the EC. Otherwise too, we have our alternate plans,” he said.

Chiru lashes at YSR for betraying BCs

HYDERABAD: Blaming chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy of betraying BCs by allocating a mere 66 seats in the ensuing elections, PRP chief Chiranjeevi announced that his party would give more than 100 Assembly seats (one-third) to BCs.
The PRP chief minced no words in stating that the claim of Congress party on social justice was a farce and reiterated that his party would announce candidates in line with the party's philosophy of social justice.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday to thank the general public and party workers for responding to his short-notice call for the public meeting, the PRP chief lashed out at the Congress for giving 138 seats to forward classes, especially 89 to one community. He reminded the chief minister of the unanimous resolution passed in the Assembly in support of 33% seats to BCs. "I demand the resignation of chief minister for failing to give due representation to BCs in Congress. I am surprised at the number of seats given to BCs by the Congress. We feel proud that our loud cry for social justice has forced Congress to take cognizance of BCs in the party", he said.
Chiranjeevi claimed that a silent revolution was underway and Saturday's meeting was a glimpse of the larger things that would be unveiled once Prajarajyam comes to power. He said the party would come out with the first list of candidates in the next 48 hours and assured to give due representation to all sections of the society.
The PRP chief said he was under tremendous pressure to contest from a constituency in West Godavari, apart from his first choice of Tirupati. He admitted that he was keen on contesting the Nalgonda assembly constituency, provided there was a provision to contest from three places.
To a query on the likelihood of resuming talks with the TRS, the PRP chief said that the time for talks was already over. "All members in the Grand Alliance want the world to know that they are united, but the fact is that each of them is pursuing their individual agenda. I am not surprised at the talk of TRS walking out of the Grand Alliance. But, let me tell you that this is one way of staying in news and keeping others confused," he said.
Admitting that securing a common election symbol was a daunting task, he said the party was optimistic of a favourable response from the Supreme Court. "We are doing our best. All we are asking for is a symbol that can easily be identified by the voter. However, an alternative plan is also in place," he said.

Chiru alleges Cong-TDP nexus on graft

HYDERABAD: Alleging ‘match-fixing’ between Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu, Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi on Saturday said they were only hoodwinking people to keep power between themselves.

Addressing a mammoth ‘Praja Vijaya Bheri’ rally at the Parade Grounds here, he said the two leaders who were criticising each other all day, became good friends by night. “And the only thing they have in common was ‘corruption’, although of different magnitudes. After all, they are from the same school (Congress),” he said. Mr. Chiranjeevi launched a scathing attack on Dr. Reddy and Mr. Naidu for suppressing reports of several commissions of inquiry ordered during their respective regimes. Mr. Naidu, in fact, went ahead to gift Dr. Reddy a power plant for withdrawing cases against him in court.

He launched a scathing attack on the Congress and the Telugu Desam for ‘neglecting’ the backward classes in allotment of party tickets. I will give the BCs more than 100 tickets. he said.

PRP promises monthly family food package scheme at Rs 200

Chiranjeevi, Praja Rajyam Party
PRP promises monthly family food package scheme at Rs 200
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/004200903181632.htm
Hyderabad (PTI): Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) has come up with yet another populist food package scheme promising a gas cylinder and grocery items for Rs 200 a month to woo voters ahead of the elections due next month in Andhra Pradesh.

This is the PRP's most important promise to the people which will ensure food security, PRP official spokesman Parakala Prabhakar told a press conference here on Wednesday.

Under the scheme, cooking gas would be supplied at Rs 100 per cylinder and grocery items for another Rs 100, which should be sufficient for a poor family for a month, Mr. Prabhakar said.

He, however, did not give any details of grocery items. This would be the first scheme that the PRP would be implementing if voted into power.

"Our scheme is by far the best. It is even better than the cash transfer scheme promised by the principal opposition Telugu Desam Party and other schemes being implemented by the Congress government," the PRP spokesman claimed.

He alleged that both the state and Central governments had failed to curb food inflation that threatened food security of the common people. The Rs 200 food package scheme would negate the impact of inflation and fill the stomachs of the poor, Mr. Prabhakar added.

The PRP also promised an industrial policy that would generate employment. "Our philosophy, slogan and policy is work for all hands and food for all stomachs. We shall encourage industrial growth in a big way so as to generate more jobs," he said.

The PRP in its election manifesto promised to create 10 lakh jobs in 1000 days, both in private and public sectors.

Meanwhile, Mr. Prabhakar wanted the Election Commission to immediately weed out about "30 lakh bogus voters" from the electoral rolls.

"We submitted documentary evidence related to 70,000 bogus voters. In fact, the state has over 30 lakh bogus voters and all of them have to be removed from the rolls to ensure a free and fair election," he said.

The PRP would take appropriate action if the EC did not remove the bogus voters from the list by March 23, he added.

TD, Congress united in graft, says Chiru
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/neutral/td%2C-congress-united-graft%2C-says-chiru-480
March 21: Praja Rajyam chief Chiranjeevi on Saturday said the Chief Minister, Mr Y.S. Raja-
sekhar Reddy, and the Telugu Desam chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, had a “tacit understanding” in corruption.
Addressing a huge gathering at the Praja Vijayabheri to kick off the Praja Rajyam campaign here, Chiranjeevi said the party would order a probe into the “ill-gotten wealth” of Mr Reddy and Mr Naidu after coming to power. He asked for a vote to end corruption.
“Though both these leaders are political rivals and criticise each other, they are good friends as far as corruption is concerned,” Chiranjeevi told cheering crowds at the Parade Grounds. “They act as if they are rivals only to distract the people.”
There was “match-fixing” between the Chief Minister and the Opposition leader in corruption, he said. That is why Dr Reddy had withdrawn a suit against Mr Naidu’s alleged corruption in the High Court.
He said though Dr Reddy had ordered several inquiry commissions into corruption during the Naidu regime, the government did not take any action.
Most of the audience comprised youth. Hundreds of people wore Chiranjeevi masks while others carried placards with the “change” slogan.
Chiranjeevi said the PR would allot more than 100 seats to candidates from the Backward Castes to show its commitment over social justice. “Neither Dr Reddy nor Mr Naidu allotted a single seat to BCs in their native districts in 2004,” he said.
The Congress had nominated 86 candidates from one caste for the ensuing Assembly polls, but had given tickets to only 66 candidates from the BCs.
Chiranjeevi promised free LPG connections for the poor, gas refills at Rs 100 and provisions for Rs 100.
Earlier, Chiranjeevi’s actor-brothers Nagendra Babu and Pavan Kalyan addressed the gathering. Babu compared Chiranjeevi to Mahatma Gandhi and said the PR chief was fully committed for the welfare of the downtrodden.
Taking a dig at Mr Naidu’s poll promise of colour TVs, Pavan Kalyan said, “Who will give the cable connection and power to those TVs? Naidu has promised free power only to agricultural sector. What about power to TVs?”

Chiru confident of victory, takes credit for social justice plank
Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi said that the social justice agenda of all parties is because of his party. All other parties are using the poor as the vote bank and doing nothing once they grab power, he added.
The ruling Congress party and the main opposition TDP are equally corrupt, he said. He quoted the classic case of Satyam fraud how the state politicians used the Satyam money and sent Ramalinga Raju behind bars.
Chiru also made light of Naidu's criticism that Chiru do not differentiate between a draft and manifesto. Chiru attacked the opportunist schemes of Naidu just to grab power. He said that Naidu's vision 2020 turned into television 2009 for the sake of power.

3,000 ex-Maoists line up to join Chiranjeevi party

3,000 ex-Maoists line up to join Chiranjeevi party
HYDERABAD: Hundreds of former naxalites, who jettisoned the Maoist movement in the last ten years, will join the Prajarajyam Party on February 24.
According to party sources, around 3,000 former militants of various factions of the CPI (ML) and CPI (Maoist) will join the newly-floated party in Hyderabad in the presence of PRP chief Chiranjeevi and Yuvarajyam president Pavan Kalyan.

This was the culmination of around six months of hardwork to mobilise the former rebels and bring them into PRP. The association of Marxist-Leninist singer Gadar and other pro-naxal intellectuals with the actor are said to have coordinated the move.

First meeting of the former naxalites was organised in Guntur in December last attended by over 800 people. The meeting was addressed by Dr P Mitra, party's senior leader.

"In fact we wanted to organise a meeting in each district. But, due to logistic reasons and lack of time, a state-level meeting is planned in Hyderabad on February 24," former People's War activist I Satyanarayana told STOI.

Satyanarayana, a native of Guntur, was a member of the erstwhile Radical Youth League. He quit the extremist organisation due to personal reasons. "Even though thousands of people left the movement long ago they are not able to lead a peaceful life because of the hostile attitude of the police and lack of support from the government. So, they feel only PRP can restore a sense of security among them," Satyanarayana said.

Chiru Praja Rajyam

Chiranjeevi also got a taste of the murkier side of politics recently, when workers of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti pelted eggs at the megastar at Narsampeta in Warangal district, during his state-wide yatra.

Smeared in egg yolk, Chiranjeevi was forced to make an unscheduled stop at a school to take a bath.

Chiru really secular?

Chiranjeevi has decided against forging political alliances for the forthcoming elections. He has ruled out alliances with the BJP, Congress and the Grand Alliance.

Chiru=controversies?

The actor-turned-politician has had his share of controversies. The police had registered a case of kidnapping against him, after he attended an inter-caste marriage, and the bride's parents complained against him.

A case has also been registered against him for conducting road shows beyond 10 pm at Narasaraopet town.

Chiru 100%

In an attempt to woo the electorate, Chiranjeevi recently unveiled an attractive package for the poor to insulate them from the impact of rising prices.

The PRP has promised that if it comes to power it will provide each poor family a package of 25 kg rice, 1 kg edible oil, 1 kg pulses, 2 kg onion, 1 kg salt and half kg tamarind -- all for mere Rs 100.

Chiru magic

Chiranjeevi recently asserted that his party will defeat the Grand Alliance, the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party in the forthcoming assembly election in the state.

"We will win 205 seats," party general secretary Prakala Prabhakar declared recently.

Chiranjeevi's road show is a hit

Thousands turned up at Praja Rajyam Party president and former actor Chiranjeevi's road show at Allagudda in Rayalseema.

Praja Rajyam’s overtures to Vysyas, Brahmins

Praja Rajyam’s overtures to Vysyas, Brahmins

HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi has declared that his party would give never-before recognition in all sectors to the neglected ‘Arya Vysya’ and Brahmin communities and specifically in proportion to their population share.

He addressed a moderate gathering of the two communities at separate meetings on Sunday and said the PR held both classes of people in high esteem for their contribution to society.

At the ‘Arya Vysya Chaitanya Sadassu’ earlier in the day he spoke of the golden age during rule of the ‘Guptas’ and how from then on, even till the modern age, the Vysyas were being neglected. He cited the names of Mahatma Gandhi and Potti Sriramulu and of their pioneering contribution to society as a whole.

Referring to their abysmally-low percentage of Vysyas in Assembly and Parliament, he said the PR would give them a chance at their representation in proportion to their population.

Later in the evening, he addressed an impressive gathering at the Brahmana Chaitanya. He recalled that right since Adi Sankara, to Tanguturu Prakasam who bared his chest and braved the British bullets and down to former Prime Minister, late P.V. Narasimha Rao, the community’s contribution could not be ignored. Referring to earlier speakers, he agreed, saying it was unfortunate that a government did not allot land in the national capital for a memorial to a man like Rao, who ushered in reforms in the country.

Mr. Chiranjeevi promised that the PR would give Brahmins, the special recognition they deserved.

Chiru doubts TRS’ commitment

Chiru doubts TRS’ commitment
KAMAREDDY (NIZAMABAD DT.): Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi doubted whether the Telangana Rashtra Samithi can achieve separate Telangana by joining hands with the Telugu Desam Party and the Left which in the past opposed Statehood for Telangana.

The TRS aligning with TDP and the Left means it has no sincerity in its movement to achieve Statehood and entered the ‘grand alliance’ only to come to power. “Telangana is people’s desire and our party has acknowledged it. We intend to pass a resolution in the Assembly as soon as our party comes to power,” he said.

He was addresseing a well-attended public meeting at the Ganj as part of his road show on Sunday.

Mr. Chiranjeevi earlier set out on his four-day tour in the district at Baswapur village in Medak district border. Women and youth gave him a rousing reception all along the route. They showered flower petals and women welcomed him with traditional bonalu.

The audience cheered him lustily whenever he referred to the admiration they showered on him as an actor and now as a politician. They listened to him in rapt attention and responded with thunderous applause when asked to support his party to usher in the “much-needed change” in the State. He addressed roadshows at Biknoor, Tadwai, Lingampet, Yellareddy, Pitlam, Nizam Sagar and proceeded to Bichkunda in Jukkal constituency for night halt.

The PR president’s tour has boosted the morale of the party leaders and activists in the district. People waited patiently for his arrival. In Kamareddy, once the stronghold of TRS, the Ganj was packed with people waiting to see their ‘megastar’.

The PRP chief though mentioned a couple of local issues such as woes of the Gulf returnees and problems of the migrated youth he failed to point out a host of other problems confronted by the people in the district. He devoted a major part of his speeches to corruption in higher places.

Addressing a meeting at Jukkal, Chiranjeevi announced the candidature of T. Aruna Tara, the first SC woman candidate being fielded by the party from Jukkal Assembly segment.

Praja Rajyam slams ‘grand alliance’

Praja Rajyam slams ‘grand alliance’

HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam president K. Chiranjeevi has described the electoral partners in the ‘grand alliance’ as those trying to ride a ‘wooden-rocking horse.’

All their political manoeuvres would give them no mileage at all, he told presspersons on Sunday morning, before leaving on a four-day tour of Nizamabad district.

He said his party was open and firm in its offer of friendship from the beginning of its talks with the Telengana Rashtriya Samiti.

But, TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao joined hands with the TDP and the Left in an alliance comprising parties which could not be termed ‘like-minded,’ the actor said.
